Services To Academics

Careers Services aim to enhance the employability of students and graduates in a variety of ways and in these efforts the relationship between the careers service and academics is crucial.

Graduate Careers Ireland and member services collaborate with academic staff and employers in developing programmes which provide students with the skills and self-awareness necessary to boost their employability.

We inform academics of changes in the graduate employment market and market students and graduates to employers and training providers

Teaching quality assessment

Careers services can help departments prepare for teaching quality assessment through:

  • the review of arrangements for careers guidance in relation to student support
  • setting up regular effective liaison
  • providing information on discipline-related careers programmes, graduate destinations and job vacancies.

Promoting employer partnerships

Careers services work in partnership with local and international employers to promote interest in students and graduates for graduate recruitment, internship and project work.

Employers are invited to participate in careers fairs and facilities are provided for presentations and interviews. Academics are welcome and encouraged to attend and develop their own contacts through these events.

We are seeking to expand this work through:

  • employer involvement in the delivery of career management skills
  • programmes the expansion of opportunities for students to gain work insights, particularly those students in less vocational disciplines
  • the development of case study materials.

The careers services also provide information resources on a comprehensive range of occupations and how to enter them, requirements for postgraduate study, employer and vacancy listing, assistance with applications and interviews.

We also provide academics with assistance and guidance in writing references for students.

Work related learning

Careers services are committed to promoting opportunities for work related learning.

We maintain a number of web-based guides to opportunities in Ireland, Great Britain and overseas.

An increasing number of university departments are offering their students the chance to include a sandwich placement as part of their course. Careers Services believe this is an important development and we welcome the opportunity to work with these students on pre-placement preparation. Equally we believe it is important that students returning to university after placement should have the opportunity to engage in reflective learning.

First destinations

Career services carry out an annual survey of the first destination of their graduates and postgraduates.

This provides an invaluable insight into the job market for graduates and postgraduates and enables labour market trends to be identified. The information can then be used in reviewing existing programmes, designing new programmes and as a marketing tool for prospective students

Supporting Student Recruitment:

Careers services support student recruitment and marketing initiatives through

  • the provision on data on graduate employment
  • liaising with guidance counsellors in schools
  • participating in open days
  • contributing to college publications.
  • Supporting departments in reviewing existing courses or designing new courses, by providing accurate information about the employment record of graduates and intelligence on labour market trends and requirements.
