Qualifying Service Membership Guide for Applicants

The Association

Graduate Careers Ireland is an association that achieves its mission primarily through the co-operative and collaborative efforts of its members. To be a member of the association and to qualify for full benefits it is necessary to be employed by or working in a "qualifying careers service" in some capacity. Graduate Careers Ireland is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity.

Membership of Graduate Careers Ireland confers a range of benefits onto careers services. Some of the most significant are:

  • Information - the Association has a tradition of providing essential careers information aimed at HE students.
  • Training - the Association's promotion of professional expertise is one of its strong features.
  • Expert Network - access to the combined wisdom of dedicated careers advisers and information office
  • Project Collaboration-services collaborate on a range of relevant projects.
  • Representation - the collective voice of the Association is influential.

Qualifying Careers Service - Definition

A "qualifying careers service" must meet a group of conditions that are determined from time-to-time by the Executive of the Association. Those conditions are currently that:

  • Career education, information and guidance services (CEIG) are provided to students registered for HE courses and for their graduates.
  • The careers service is based in and is an integral part of a publicly funded HE Institution, and the service is empowered and resourced to co-ordinate that institution's CEIG activity centrally.
  • CEIG services to HE students are provided at a resource level of at least one careers adviser who is employed for a minimum of 20 hours a week in the institution. That role may be shared, but not by more than two individuals.
  • The careers service will be expected to contribute to the collaborative work of Graduate Careers Ireland.
  • The institution commits itself to encourage and permit its careers service staff to contribute to Graduate Careers Ireland collaborative activity in order to maintain and develop benefits and services.
  • The service has achieved or is working towards an approved quality accreditation standards.
  • The careers service will support the Graduate Careers Ireland/GroupGTI Partnership.
  • The institution commits itself to paying appropriate subscriptions.

The Application Process

The Graduate Careers Ireland Credentials Committee (ACC) manages the application process on behalf of the Graduate Careers Ireland Executive to which it makes recommendations concerning membership. Careers services wishing to apply for Qualifying Service membership should do the following.

  • Obtain the application form by clicking here or by contacting the secretary
  • Submit the completed form to the Chair of Graduate Careers Ireland Credentials Committee.

The following outcomes are possible:

  1. Membership application approved.
  2. Membership application not approved.

The decision of the Graduate Careers Ireland Executive is final.

Continued Membership
Continued membership of the Association will depend upon the careers service continuing to meet the conditions of membership from time-to-time in force and paying appropriate subscriptions.
